The smallest circle in the center represents one (as in one beat per measure), the next concentric circle out is two (divided into two sections); the next is three, and so forth. Theoretically, the progression is infinite.

The chart expresses not only the beauty of numbers, but is a teaching and visualization tool for understanding and playing polyrhythms-more than one rhythm simultaneously. It is easy to see from this chart how to make transitions from different divisions of the bar or beat. The chart is also helpful in understanding fractions.
